St. Thomas is a beacon for those seeking the tranquility of secluded beaches and resorts. From the covered picnic tables to Magens Bay to iguana watching at Limetree beach, the soft sands of St. Thomas' beaches will soothe the soul. Having a history as colorful as the coral reefs, the U.S. Virgin Islands of St. Thomas and St. John are a meld of Spain, France, England, Holland, Denmark and the United States. While restaurants feature international cuisine, do not venture home without savoring the West Indian specialties of fungi, conch, or kallaloo. Nestled between the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, St. Thomas is a study of contrasts with green mountainous peaks rising as high as 1,550 feet about sea level. Blackbeard the pirate left his legacy here, but you can still go on a modern day treasure hunt in the duty-free shops where there is an endless bounty of jewelry, art, local crafts, crystal, china, watches, linens, perfumes and clothing. Only five miles from St. Thomas awaits another piece of paradise -St. John. St. John may only be 19 square miles, but there is plenty to do. The National Park, which makes up two-thirds of the island, is protected, pristine land where nature's beauty remains untouched.
